This plate represents a meditative bridge between Chinese Shufa calligraphy and sculpture. The artist repeatedly writes the character for “cloud” on Xuanzhi Chinese Shufa paper, embedding fluid imageries into the material. In Chinese culture, written words are believed to possess souls, acting as sacred vessels for history and ritual. These pages are collected and sculpted into new forms, where sanding reveals a stone-like texture and “geological weight” that belies their actual lightness. By reshaping paper embedded with the written word, the artist aims to restore the inherent connection between the human spirit and the natural world.
